I upgraded my Ubuntu box to 8.04 Herdy Heron couple weeks ago. And I quite notice that my VMware Server was removed from the menu. Yeah, you got it right! VMware server hasn’t support Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron with its Linux 2.6.24-17 kernel. But anyway, I need OS virtualization. And having few days out of the office, I just got recently succesful in bring the application back to my desktop.

Here are the list of what I was doing. First, I removed my old VMware, along with its configuration file and so on. To do this, I used Synaptic, searched for VMware related packages, and do a ‘complete remove’.

Then I downloaded VMware server from its download page. While still at the website, it is a good idea to register and then request for serial number since it will be needed on installation. And it’s free, by the way.. :)

The second file to download is the patch, which is available here : http://uruz.org/files/vmware-any-any-update-116.tgz.

After you done, I followed the instruction which has been briefly introduced by Kokopelli in Ubuntu forum. Followed the steps, and answered the wizard. Mostly with its default value.. :-p

And here it is. VMware server running on my Ubuntu Hardy Heron!

Thank you for your tip. Though Ubunt is so unstable (I had to reintall it so often in my Sata HD) that I quit Linux. It is a pity it is not still reliable for begginers.
