Business Analysis

Done the exam couple days ago. I guess it would be good to write something about this unit before I put it on ‘archive’ mode.. :D

INN220 Business Analysis is one of mandatory units in Master of IT (Enterprise System) course in QUT. It gives the introduction to the role, knowledge, and skills required of a business analyst, as depicted in “A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge”® (BABOK® Guide) by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Business Analyst is basically the one who acts as liaison among stakeholders in order to understand the structure, policies, and operations of an organization, and to recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals [1].

I’ve heard of this skill set quite a while ago, when interacting with some of external consultants holding business analysis certificate (CBAP). I think it also helped that I have done some related activities in work while doing this unit. However, there were still some new things that quite useful, not to mention that this opportunity provided more formal recognition of the skill set. Still, I’m having my eyes looking at further opportunity to take the CBAP certification some time later. Guess it would fit right in the portfolio.. :)

Back to the unit, basically it provided the opportunity to learn and practice some of the activities and techniques around the knowledge areas (fig. 1). The lecturer went into detail in every week lecture describing tasks in each knowledge areas, always with the what, why, and how aspects to it. Starting from Enterprise Analysis where BA tries to identify a business need, problem, or opportunity, define the nature of a solution that meets that need, and justify the investment necessary to deliver that solution [2]; up until Solution Assessment and Validation where BA tries to ensure that solutions meet the business need and to facilitate their successful implementation [3].

Overall, I’m quite satisfied with this unit, as it provided complete overview of what a business analyst doing. The workshop sessions and the project were also very helpful in providing the opportunity to exercise the techniques. A level of study experience that one would expect from QUT.
